VINTAGE FILM Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

A European remake might someday blame a pre-Labour Day strike, but in this American original it is stormy weather that stays a marketing executive (Martin) and a shower curtain ring salesman (Candy) from their appointed returns to Chicago for Thanksgiving. Back in 1987, Planes, Trains and Automobiles was a major departure for director John Hughes, who had previously typecast himself as the master of teen angst – here, he created memorable roles for two established stars and a holiday classic.
