VINTAGE FILM Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

When a married person takes up a new religion or self-help fad, many spouses play along and hope for the best. But when Roy Neary (Dreyfuss) starts obsessing about UFOs (he literally “sees the light”), his wife takes their three children and heads for…who cares: we never liked her anyway (if you want a Dreyfuss film about marriage, we nominated one of those, too [link to “The Goodbye Girl”]), and we’d rather see what Roy sees: a diplomatic visit to Earth by a giant, hovering Simon™ console from another galaxy. Classic sci-fi, with yet another unforgettable John Williams score.
