This day-in-the-life tale of a fashion photographer in Swinging London – models, sex, drugs, groovy bands, more sex – was filmed with a level of shameless candor that made it a must-see (“Antonioni’s camera never flinches,” boasts the trailer). The fact that most of the performers are playing versions of themselves (including Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page) adds to the unaffected vibe. Another English-language debut from a European director, this one was called the year’s best film by The New Yorker, Life, Time, and Newsweek. Filmmakers have been borrowing heavily from Blow-up for 50 years, not least the Austin Powers franchise.
